So, this thing is coming together, slowly but surely. I think I’ve pin-pointed a drummer. His name is Ian L. (Don’t have a clue how to spell the last name, so I’m not even gonna try.)
When I was doing Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” in Tulsa, I met Amy Smith, who coincidentally moved to NYC also. Her ex-boyfriend apparently is this amazing drummer and she set us up.
So, I’m looking forward to working with him. Now if I can only find a guitar player. The next step is to get into a rehearsal space for about $15/hr and lay down some of me singing with the piano as a raw/rough track for Ian to play around with and get some beats going…
I’ll keep ya posted! Yea!
Hey, everybody! You love how I say “everybody” as if I have a ton of fans actually reading this? It’s OK. Make-believe is an actor’s world. So, why shouldn’t it apply to my online journal as well?
Moving on… I believe that I’ve located a recording studio that I’ll be recording in very shortly! It’s called The Smooth Spot and Michael Welsh (hope I spelled that OK if he’s reading this) is the owner. What sold me, besides being relatively inexpensive to record there, was the fact that he himself is an actor/singer/songwriter/piano player, etc… The last studio I recorded in, the guy was strictly a “producer” and really knew nothing about music at all, and I was really just left on my own. He would just do the button clickings. And I’m no “pro” by any means and appreciate some assistance and some sort of input. On the last recording, I played every single instrument you hear (some synthesized), all the vocals, did all the arranging, and it was just ALL me from scratch. He literally would just push buttons and sit at the computer and say start & stop. And though I’m very proud of myself for being able to run my own recording session my first go in a studio, it was a bit overwhelming, and I was not completely satisfied with the outcome.
I’m also really excited about 2 new songs I’ve written recently. I’m so happy to realize that I’ve still “got it.” I think it’s safe to say that I’m not the only artist to have the fear of “losing it.” I know I’ll always have the voice I was blessed with unless, God forbid, something should happen to it physically with an accident or something, but as for my song-writing ability–every time I’m finished with a song I really love, I wonder if that’s the last one I had. And it’s quite a relief to actually write just one more that you think is even better than the last one! I was experiencing something in my personal life that inspired me to write the song called “Again” and the second song I wrote, I’m not quite sure where it came from. HAHA. It’s not really about me at all. And I can’t really relate to it, but I love it, and it’s gorgeous! I never usually rave about my own material and am my own worse, brutal critic, but I just really actually like it. I found myself humming a song the other day on the subway and was amused to realize it was my own song I had just written the day before. It’s called “The Chance.” I’m really proud of them because they’re melodically so beautiful and the lyrics hold so much meaning that people could relate to, I hope. And I like that they can also easily be up-tempo songs. I play the piano, so everything ends up coming out almost like a ballad at first, but with these 2 songs, I’d love to find a great drummer and a few guitarists to rock out on them with me!
I can’t wait to get into the studio and make these happen. These 2 will definitely be on there. I’ll have to select 4 to 6 more as I’d like to record about 6 to 8 songs total. We’ll see how it goes! As for the acting… still going at it.
I may also be performing my songs at The D-Lounge in Union Square soon, hopefully some time after I’m finished recording the demo. I’ll keep you posted on that.
Later, “EVERYBODY!”
